SUMMARY:1st meeting of the Thematic Group on Landscape Features and Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:The farmed landscape has a large role to play in conserving and restoring biodiversity levels across Europe. Continued ecosystem degradation has led to the European Green DealSearch for available translations of the preceding linkEN••• calling for sustainable food systems in the Farm to Fork StrategySearch for available translations of the preceding linkEN••• and enhanced protection of natural resources in agricultural landscapes in the Biodiversity Strategy 2030Search for available translations of the preceding linkEN•••. The latter sets the target for 10% of agricultural land to incorporate landscape features\, or non-productive areas which provide ecosystem services and support biodiversity. The proposed Nature Restoration RegulationSearch for available translations of the preceding linkEN••• also targets the maintenance and creation of landscape features\, such as “buffer strips\, rotational or non-rotational fallow land\, hedgerows\, individual or groups of trees\, tree rows\, field margins\, patches\, ditches\, streams\, small wetlands\, terraces\, cairns\, stonewalls\, small ponds and cultural features”. \nThe CAP Strategic Plans will be a key tool to promote improved maintenance and creation of landscape features in agricultural landscapes through conditionality (Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) 8) and additional funding within eco-schemes under Pillar 1 and EAFRD-funded agri-environment-climate measures under Pillar 2 targeting various landscape features. \nThis first meeting of the Thematic Group on Landscape Features and BiodiversitySearch for available translations of the preceding linkEN••• will focus on sharing examples of European good practices and promising approaches to encourage landscape features\, discussing how these can be better supported using various interventions under the CAP and what the key enablers and barriers are to doing this. \nAims of the meeting \n\nTo explore how greater maintenance\, restoration and creation of landscape features can be achieved via the CAP through the identification of the key enabling conditions that must be in place.\nTo identify ways in which the range of CAP interventions can be used to support different types of landscape features and what other support is required to promote more diversity and higher-quality landscape features for biodiversity and ecosystem services.\nShare experiences and lessons learnt from Member States’ previous programming period supporting landscape features and discuss how these may inform approaches under the CSPs.

SUMMARY:EIP-AGRI Workshop Conversion to organic farming
DESCRIPTION:The EIP-AGRI workshop ‘Conversion to organic farming: innovative approaches and challenges’ will take place on 22-23 June 2022 in Florence\, Italy. \nThis workshop will focus on exchanging knowledge and sharing innovative\, inspirational practices that can support farmers in successful conversion to organic agriculture. The event will allow participants to exchange ideas and experiences with innovative projects and stakeholders along the value chain\, and discuss future research needs in the field of organic farming and conversion. \nAll information and updates will be posted on this page. \nThe event will be by invitation only. An open call for expression of interest is open until 11 April\, 23:59 CET.  \n\n\nDraft programme outline (update 22/03/2022)\n\n\nEvent description and objectives: \nAs part of its “Farm to Fork” strategy\, the European Commission (EC) emphasises the role of organic agriculture in a sustainable food system. To achieve the target of reaching ‘at least 25% of the EU’s agricultural land under organic farming by 2030’\, and to help the organic sector excel\, the EC has put forward a new Action Plan for the Development of Organic Production in the EU. Actions are needed in all stages of the agri-food supply chain\, to increase the share of land farmed under organic practices and to stimulate conversion from conventional to organic farming. \nSuccessful conversion requires a comprehensive knowledge of organic production practices\, and a good understanding of the conversion process\, and the rules and legislation (for production\, certification\, labelling\, controls) that apply in every stage of the process. Farmers therefore need comprehensive business plans as essential tools for successful conversion. Split holdings\, having some areas under conventional farming and some in conversion\, bring specific challenges. This brings a growing need for support\, through training\, peer-to-peer learning\, advisory or other kinds of support for farmers who have decided to convert to organic production. \nThe EIP-AGRI workshop wants to stimulate exchanges between projects and initiatives\, including EIP-AGRI Operational Groups\, Horizon 2020\, Horizon Europe and other innovative projects\, and key actors working on organic or conversion to organic. They can provide important knowledge\, tools and innovations that help fulfil farmers’ needs in the conversion process\, and overall\, contribute to building an innovative ecosystem for cross-fertilisation. \nOverall aim of the workshop: \nThe workshop will create a platform for exchanging knowledge and sharing innovative\, inspirational practices that can support farmers in successful conversion to organic agriculture. This will help building a solid foundation of knowledge\, skills and motivation for farmers on the path to conversion\, and will thus support the implementation of the Action Plan on the Development of Organic Production in the EU. \nSpecific objectives of the workshop: \n\nExchanging knowledge on successful practices\, opportunities and tools that are relevant for the conversion process\, specifically on:\n\nInnovative approaches to scale up/out conversion;\nSuccessful business plans for conversion\, including the compulsory conversion plan;\nLabelling and marketing for the conversion period and beyond;\nPractices to improve the position of farmers in the supply chain in а transition period\, including solutions involving key actors from farmers to consumers\n\n\nIdentifying challenges and exploring potential solutions in the conversion process\nIdentifying needs from practice and possible knowledge gaps that may be filled by research\nIdentifying innovative approaches and good practices in the EU Member States\, focusing on environmental\, social\, technical and economic dimensions\nPromote networking among EIP-AGRI Operational Groups and other innovative projects dealing with conversion to organic farming\n\nTarget group: \nThe focus of the workshop will be on farmers who have already decided on or started up the process of conversion. However\, farmers who are considering converting to organic farming are more than welcome\, as are organic farmers who can provide advice and inspiration. \nOther participants will include advisors\, researchers\, representatives from organic farmers’ associations\, cooperatives\, control bodies\, chambers of agriculture\, industry\, processors\, retailers\, other public\, private and managing bodies\, consumer organisations\, local authorities and agri-press. \n\n\n\n\nVenue Address:\n\nFlorence\, Italy

SUMMARY:EIP-AGRI brokerage event ’Get involved in the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe’
DESCRIPTION:The EIP-AGRI brokerage event ’Get involved in the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe’ will take place on 8-9 June 2022 in Brussels\, Belgium. \nThis event will offer matchmaking sessions through face-to-face meetings and networking amongst farmers\, advisors\, researchers\, and other relevant stakeholders to support the preparation of proposals for the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ call that will be launched in May. Additionally\, the activity will create conditions for exchanging knowledge and innovative ideas and practices (living labs and lighthouses)\, that may inspire potential applicants to take part in the next EU Mission call. \nAll information and updates will be posted on this page. \nThe event will be by invitation only. An open call for expression of interest is open until 22 April\, 23:59 CET. \n\nEvent description and objectives: \nThe main objective of the brokerage event is to support the Horizon Europe call for proposals under the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe. Specific objectives include: \n– improving awareness on the EU Soil Mission and its work programme 2022 and the opportunities offered under its calls\, \n– supporting future applicants in finding potential partners\, and \n– sharing further information on the call and its topics\, thus contributing to improving the quality of the proposals. \nThe Horizon Europe mission work programme for 2022 will be published on 12 May 2022\, with a call for proposals to support the implementation of the EU Soil Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe. The info days for this call are planned for 17 and 18 May. \n\nThe EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe will bring concrete solutions to the challenges related to soil. It aims to reduce soil degradation and desertification\, conserve soil organic carbon stocks\, stop soil sealing\, reduce soil pollution\, prevent erosion\, improve soil structure\, reduce EU footprint on soils and improve soil literacy. The EU Mission is also part of global commitments such as the UN sustainable Development goals (SDGs) that has seven goals which directly or indirectly involve soils and the European Green Deal which highlights the importance of soil as essential in order to face climate change and environmental challenges. \nThe EU Soil Mission will support the transition towards healthy soils by 2030 by setting up a network of 100 living labs and lighthouses in rural and urban areas. Living labs are places to co-create and test knowledge on the ground\, with different actors coming together to find solutions to shared challenges. Lighthouses are individual sites (such as a farm or a park) which are examples of innovative solutions for soil health that can inspire others. \n\n\n\n\nVenue Address:\n\nBrussels\, Belgium

SUMMARY:1st meeting of the ENRD Thematic Group on Rural Proofing
DESCRIPTION:Rural proofing is a mechanism that can help boost rural revitalisation by ensuring all relevant policies are aligned with rural needs and realities. It is also one of the transversal elements outlined in the Long Term Vision for Rural Areas. In the vision it is indicated that the EU will take steps to integrate a rural proofing mechanism as part of the Better Regulation Agenda\, notably to assess the anticipated impact of major EU legislative initiatives on rural areas. The vision also calls for Member States to consider implementing the rural proofing principle at the national\, regional and local level.  \nThis is the first meeting of the ENRD Thematic Group (TG) on Rural Proofing\, which is launched with the ambition to support the design and implementation of rural proofing mechanisms within Member States at different administrative levels (national\, regional and local). The meeting sets the scene on rural proofing and provides a space for sharing knowledge and experience on what should be considered when designing rural proofing mechanisms and applying them in practice. \nAims of the meeting \n\nTo provide an overview of existing experience on rural proofing in different countries\, with a particular attention to success factors and challenges;\nTo start discussing how to design effective rural proofing mechanisms taking into account specific contexts and different administrative levels; and\nTo exchange on the further work of the Thematic Group\, including activities in-between meetings.

SUMMARY:The 2021 EU Agricultural Outlook conference
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nThe 2021 EU Agricultural Outlook conference took place online on 9 and 10 December. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Fit for 2030 – resilient EU agri-food systems and rural areas’. \nThe conference examined what we expect global agricultural markets to look like in 2030\, in light of the political and market uncertainty currently facing the agricultural sector. Will food systems be more resilient following the Covid-19 pandemic? Will the new common agricultural policy effectively encourage farmers across Europe to embrace the green transition? \nSenior representatives from EU bodies and international organisations\, farmers\, agricultural experts and rural actors discussed these questions\, as well as the broader medium-term outlook for agricultural markets\, income and environment. \nThe EU Agricultural Outlook conference has become a successful annual event for broad exchanges among stakeholders on market prospects in agriculture\, including the political framework and uncertainties surrounding market developments in the next 10 years. Each year the conference coincides with the release of the annual report on market prospects. \nKeynote speech by Mr Janusz Wojciechowski
